Oregon State Missouri
2006 SUN BOWL

The inaugural Sun Bowl was played on January 1, 1935, between Texas high school teams. The game was scheduled by the local Kiwanas Club as a fund-raiser to benefit underprivileged children as well as fund improvements to the El Paso High School football stadium (the site of the first three games). The first official "Sun Bowl" game between collegiate opponents kicked off a year later. In 1938, the game moved to Kidd Field on the campus of Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy (later Texas Western College; now the University of Texas at El Paso) and in 1963 to a new stadium constructed especially for the Sun Bowl. Today the Sun Bowl is El Paso's leading national attraction. Only the Rose Bowl has been in existence longer.

The 2006 Sun Bowl featured Oregon State and Missouri. It was the first-ever Sun Bowl participation for the Beavers. Mizzou's one prior appearance was in 1973 (34-17 over Auburn). The only time the 2006 Sun Bowl teams met previously on the gridiron was in 1956. OSU opened its season with a narrow 19-13 win against the Tigers in Columbia.

Junior Sammie Stroughter's 38-yard punt return to near midfield set up the Oregon State game-winning drive. OSU trailed by 14 points with just over 12 minutes to go.

The 2006 Sun Bowl culminated opposite seasons for Oregon State and Missouri. After a tenuous 2-3 start, the Beavers won eight of their last nine games—including nail-biters over USC, Oregon, and Hawaii—capped by the come-from-behind Sun Bowl triumph decided by a successful two-point conversion with just 22 seconds remaining, and finished in the nation's top 25. OSU's 10-4 record was the second best in school history, topped only by the 2000 team (11-1). Conversely, Missouri's fourth-quarter Sun Bowl collapse (the Beavers scored 18 points in the furious final period) epitomized its bittersweet season. After bolting to a 7-1 start, the Tigers dropped four of their last five contests to finish at 8-5 overall.
