Suggested Term Projects


  RESEARCH PAPER  


  • Must be typed and double-spaced with appropriate margins.
  • Topics may be selected by the student or assigned by the instructor.
  • Must contain title page, table of contents, and bibliography.
  • Body should be a minimum of five pages in length.
  • Use footnotes where necessary.
  • Must use at least three sources (include your text; do not list encyclopedias).
  • No special cover is needed.


  BOOK REPORT  


  • Read one book on a topic selected by the student or assigned by the instructor.
  • Book must be approved by the instructor.
  • A five-page typed report is required.
  • Ask the instructor for guidance as to what should be included in each report.


  HISTORICAL TRADING CARDS  


  • The student may create a set of trading cards depicting significant events or personalities, with a particular theme in mind.
  • Cards should measure no larger than 3" by 5."
  • The total set must contain at least 20 cards.
  • Back side should contain important data about the subject of front side.


  WALL MAP OR CHART  


  • Map or chart should measure 30" by 44" or larger.
  • Map area or chart topic can be selected by the student or by the instructor.
  • Must be done in color with lettering large enough to be used as a classroom aid.
  • Accompany map or chart with a one-page typed explanation.
  • The student should meet with the instructor before starting this project.


  CURRENT NEWS SCRAPBOOK  


  • The student, with the help of the instructor, chooses a current news story that will someday be important history.
  • Collect, clip, and identify at least 20 different newspaper and/or magazine articles on the subject of the story over a two-month period.
  • Mount each clipping chronologically in an organized fashion.
  • Include a two-page typed summary.
  • Must use at least three sources.


  PICTURE DRAWING  


  • The student may choose any prominent person or object throughout United States history.
  • Should be drawn on paper 24" by 24" or larger.
  • Drawing may also be watercolored.
  • Drawing must be accompanied by a typed explanation at least one page in length.
  • Outstanding examples are shown below (also on display in room 234).



  SLIDE TAPE PRESENTATION  


  • The student may select a topic or it may be assigned by the instructor.
  • Collect at least 20 photos and make slides.
  • Write a script to accompany the slides and tape someone reading the script (key the slides to your recording).
  • All presentations should include credits and background music.
  • This project can be done on video tape or movie film instead of slides.
  • Should be at least 15 minutes in duration.
  • Arrange class time prior to due date with instructor.


  HISTORICAL MODEL  


  • The student may select the model subject or it may be assigned by the instructor.
  • Model must be accompanied by a typed explanation at least one page in length.
  • The student should meet with the instructor before starting the project.


  PHOTOGRAPHIC IDENTIFICATION  


  • Locate a collection of photographs about a historical person, place, or event.
  • Photos are to be numbered.
  • On additional paper, with corresponding numbers, identify each photo in 1-3 sentences.
  • A minimum of 20 photos is required.
  • Construction paper may be used.


  BRICK PAINTING  


  • This option is available second semester only.
  • Must present sketch for instructor's approval.
  • Topics of existing bricks may not be duplicated.
  • The student has two weeks to complete brick.
  • The student is responsible for obtaining all supplies as well as prep and clean-up.
  • Work must be performed outside of class hour.

  HISTORICAL NEWS TIME  


  • Students may act out a certain historical event on video tape or slide presentation.
  • Presentation must be as least 15 minutes in length.
  • Arrange class time prior to due date with instructor.
  • See the instructor for details.


  THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE  


  • Students may act out a particular historical event in a short play for the class.
  • Presentation must be at least 15 minutes in length.
  • Costumes (however limited) would certainly add to the project.
  • Introductory and concluding statements must be provided for the class.
  • Arrange class time prior to due date with instructor.

  HISTORICAL FOOD PRESENTATION  


  • The student may prepare a culinary item of historical importance.
  • Enough food must be prepared to serve the entire class.
  • Food service should be accompanied by a brief oral report.
  • Arrange class time prior to due date with instructor.
  • The student must submit a typed list of all ingredients.

  OTHER OPTIONS  


  • Students may create an appropriate project to suit their interests and talents.
  • Students may work jointly on some of the projects.
  • In both cases, students must have prior approval of the instructor.
  • See the instructor should questions or problems arise concerning any of the projects.


  CHECKLIST FOR ALL FORMATS  


  • Did you follow all conditions listed above for the particular project type you selected?
  • Does your project cover a significant topic in American history?
  • Has all assembly (cutting, gluing, etc.) been done neatly?
  • Did you adequately handle all necessary set-up and clean-up responsibilities?
  • Is your project properly titled?
  • Is all accompanying explanatory material thorough and composed in your own words?
  • Is all data correct, including scale relationship of any drawings you have included?
  • Have you provided a list of sources used?
  • Will you submit your project on time?
  • Does your full name and period number clearly appear somewhere on your project?
