The surviving flag of the USS California at Pearl Harbor, rescued by a workman reaching a clothes hanger into the water on December 7, 1941.  The California was among eight battleships damaged or sunk as a result of Japan's surprise attack which left the American Pacific Fleet temporarily crippled and ultimately plunged the United States into World War II.
