The surviving flag from the USS California, rescued by a worker reaching out with a clothes hanger into the Pearl Harbor waters following Imperial Japan's sudden attack on December 7, 1941. The "date of infamy" strike temporarily disabled the U.S. Pacific Fleet (the California was among eight battleships, including the Arizona, damaged or sunk that day) and plunged America into World War II.
